Why William and Kate's trip was kept a secret

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge kicked off a surprise royal tour of Northern Ireland on Wednesday.

Kensington Palace usually informs the public of official engagements in advance, but this time it was kept under wraps for security reasons.

Details of the couple's planned activities weren't released until the day of the royal visit.

Fans were quick to turn out to see Prince William and Kate once the visit was announced, with a large crowd waiting for them as they stepped from their car.

The first day of the royal couple’s tour focused on promoting the positive impact sport, nature and the outdoors can have on childhood development.

The Duke and Duchess visited Windsor Park and heard about the Irish Football Associations community projects.

They then travelled to County Fermanagh to visit a youth centre, before returning to the capital for a party at the iconic Belfast Empire Hall.

On Thursday the couple will travel to Ballymena for a number of engagements before returning home to their children Prince George, five, Princess Charlotte, three, and Prince Louis, 10 months.

The Cambridges will then visit Blackpool in North West England on March 6.
