The royal who made history at 19: Meet Princess Salma of Jordan

She's a member of one of the oldest ruling dynasties and at just 20, Princess Salma has already made history for women in her country.

Princess Salma bint Abdullah of Jordan is the youngest daughter of His Majesty King Abdullah II and Her Majesty Queen Rania.

Following in her father's footsteps

Last year, Salma became the first young Jordanian woman to complete preliminary pilot training on a fixed-winged aircraft, making her the country's first female pilot.

She has followed in her father's military footsteps, with the King himself, presenting her with her aviation wings – a badge from the Jordan Armed Forces, Emirates Woman reported.

Despite her youth, the princess is taking her role in the royal family seriously. Last week, she deputised for her father at the inauguration of the Military Women's Training Centre in Zarqa, in Jordan.

British royal connection

At just 18, Salma graduated from the UK's Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. It is the same prestigious school where British royals Prince William and Prince Harry attended.

Salma's family appears to share a close bond, with her parents and siblings sharing touching updates, birthday messages and notes of support.

"Brilliant and hard-working as always," her brother, Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II wrote in a post to Instagram after the princess's graduation.

"Congrats on receiving your wings and here's to more success and achievements."

Close family

She also shares a close bond with sister Princess Iman bint Abdullah.

Though there is a four-year age gap, the pair almost share a birthday, one being born one day apart from the other.

"This is perfect smile, congratulations once again my beautiful sister princess Salma," Princess Iman wrote in post to Instagram.

She joins a list of female relatives who followed the family's military line.

Her aunt, Princess Aisha bint Hussein, was the first Arab woman to attend Sandhurst. She graduated back in 1987 and later went on to serve in Jordan's special forces.

Princess Iman, another of Salma's aunts, also graduated from Sandhurst in 2003.

His Majesty King Abdullah II and his family are members of the Hashemite dynasty, a royal family line in Jordan since 1921.
