The royals we can expect to see at Trooping the Colour - and who likely won't be there

Trooping the Colour is just over a week away and preparations are in full swing.

The annual event is the official birthday celebration of King Charles III and one of the biggest events in the British royal family's calendar so we can expect to see many members of the Royal family in attendance.

Despite his ongoing cancer diagnosis, it has been confirmed that the King will be in attendance for the traditional ceremony which will take place on June 15 (UK time).

However, instead of inspecting the troops on horseback as is tradition, he will attend in the Ascot landau carriage, as an accommodation for his health.

He will be accompanied by his wife Queen Camilla on the day who will join him in the carriage and later on the Buckingham Palace balcony for the Royal Air Force flypast.

This year will mark King Charles' second Trooping the Colour since his coronation in May 2023.

While his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, invited the whole extended family to make an appearance, the King made the decision to limit the famous balcony appearance to working royals only, barring many well-known members of the monarchy from joining him.

It is understood the King will continue with this ruling this year presenting on the balcony with only a few key members of his family.

This being so, we can expect to see a similar balcony appearance to that of last year.

The King and Queen are expected to be joined by the King's son and the heir apparent Prince William.

Prince William's three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis are also expected to be in attendance. Royal fans were delighted when they appeared on the balcony last year and hope to see them again this year.

While the children have attended almost every year since 2019 (excluding 2020 and 2021, when Trooping the Colour was cancelled) this year will be very different as it will likely be their first time attending without their mother, Catherine, the Princess of Wales.

While it has not been confirmed, Catherine is likely to miss the event this year as she continues to undergo cancer treatment. However royal expert Dr Tessa Dunlop told The Mirror she has a "hunch" that she will make a small appearance and give the public a wave.

In their mother's absence, the three children are expected to ride with the King and Queen in the royal parade.

"I have this lovely little feeling, that perhaps, the carriage will include the king and queen and the three grandchildren," royal author Marlene Koenig told Daily Express US, adding that "people would be really disappointed" if the Wales children don't attend.

Other working royals that can be expected to make an appearance include the King's only sister Anne, Princess Royal and her husband Sir Timothy Lawrence, and the Duke and Duchess of Edinburgh, who were all present on the Buckingham Palace balcony last year.

There is also a possibility that some junior working royals may be in attendance including the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, who both made an appearance on the famous balcony last year. As well as the Duke of Kent, 88, and Princess Alexandra, 87, who was seen recently in a wheelchair.

In Catherine's absence from Royal duties, Prince William has been known to lean on the support of his cousins Princess Beatrice, Princess Eugenie, Zara and Mike Tindall, and Peter Phillips. It is likely that they may make an appearance at this year's event however as non-working royals they are not expected to appear on the balcony.

As non-working royals the Duke and Duchess of Sussex will not appear on the balcony this year and it is unconfirmed whether they will attend the event. The same stands for the King's brother Prince Andrew.
