The special meaning behind Meghan's silver bracelet

The Duchess of Sussex has become known for wearing clothing and jewellery that not only look good, but also make a statement.

Meghan, 38, frequently throws her support behind brands with a focus on ethical production and chooses pieces of jewellery with a special meaning.

She's been doing this long before officially joining the British royal family through her marriage to Prince Harry, 34.

In a new photo shared to the SussexRoyal Instagram account, taken in 2017, Meghan is seen wearing a piece of jewellery known as an 'Elephant Hair' bracelet.

The snap was taken in Botswana when Prince Harry and his then-girlfriend visited the African nation to work with animal charity Elephants Without Borders (EWB). The photo shows Meghan's hands cradling an elephant trunk.

In days gone by the bracelets were made of actual elephant hair but now, thankfully, thin strands of metal are used instead.

According to folklore, when an elephant dies its soul leaves the body through the tail. The symbolic strands of elephant hair, woven and knotted into a bracelet, is said to protect the wearer with the elephant's strength, wisdom and spirit.

The thin strands of metal are secured with knots, or clasps, which represent the earth, sun, moon, and stars. When the wearer opens and closes the bracelet by putting it on, the moving parts are said to represent the changing seasons, creating harmony and balance between the earth and its people, according to Aventura jewellery, which has a focus on African-themed pieces.

When worn on the left wrist – as Meghan has done – the bracelet is said to have been gifted from someone special (Harry, perhaps?).

For those wanting to copy the Duchess' style, elephant hair bracelets come in a variety of styles and prices, ranging from $15 to $500.

Meghan was also wearing her signature thin stacking rings and her Kismet ring, which she has worn multiple times since.

The $440 ring, by Turkish brand Kismet by Milka, features a 'Hamsa Hand' representing the 'Hand of God'. The palm-shaped amulet is popular in North Africa and the Middle East.

It's a protective sign and noted for bringing its owner happiness, luck, health, good fortune and a protection against evil and negativity.

In December 2018, Meghan wore the piece during her visit to the Royal Variety Charity's residential nursing and care home, Brinsworth House, where she joined residents and staff for an early Christmas celebration.
