Royals on the road: Meghan mania descends on Wellington

Royals on the Road is a diary of 9Honey reporter Natalie Oliveri’s experiences following Prince Harry and Meghan Markle across Australia and New Zealand as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex take on their first international Royal Tour.

Meghan Markle mania has well and truly hit Wellington, as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex embark on the final leg of their mammoth royal tour.

Crowds in Wellington were loud, excited and certainly prepared to get Harry and Meghan's attention the moment the couple stepped out of their car at the National War Memorial, on Sunday.

As the Duke of Sussex opened his door screams could be heard from the thousands waiting to catch a glimpse of the world's most famous newlyweds.

From what I've seen so far on this tour, no matter how many times 'Harry' or 'Meghan' can be heard from the masses, the royal couple is so focused on who they have to meet they don't let the noise distract them.

Well, today Wellington made itself heard. The Prince quickly looked towards the crowds as he exited the car and gave a wave, and a smile, before taking part in the day's solemn events - the laying of a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

But soon after, it was time to meet the New Zealand public for the first time - many had been waiting more than seven hours and crowds were at least five rows deep.

And those waiting were indeed in for a treat with one of the longest 'walkabouts' seen so far on the royal tour. Despite the blustery winds, the Duke and Duchess took their time meeting the locals.

They seemed to enjoy this meet and greet more than any other, judging by the amount of time they spent mingling with the masses.

One royal fan who got more time than any with Harry and Meghan was schoolgirl Victoria - perhaps it was her uncontrollable sobs that caught their attention.

The Duchess was seen touching the girl's arm and comforting her, the brush with royalty all too much to handle for the teenager.

Prince Harry too, seemed touched by Victoria's excitement.

When asked by 9Honey what she said to the royal couple Victoria explained, "I told her how beautiful she is and how inspiring I find her work with World Vision and how I'd love to be half the person she is".

And Meghan's response?

"She was just trying to calm me down and she was like, 'Just breathe'. She's just so kind and genuine and I'll never forget it. They're both lovely, genuine, kind, incredible people."

Victoria's friend, Emily, got to experience some of Prince Harry's famed cheekiness.

"Prince Harry is so lovely, so charming," Emily told 9Honey.

"[I said to him] Some people say I have the same hair colour as you and he was like, 'Yea nah, I'm more of a redhead than you'."

But there was one redhead who really did catch the royal's attention. The Prince saw a little boy holding a sign reading, 'Hi Harry, I'm Harry'.

"He asked me who painted it," Harry, seven, told 9Honey adding it was "really, really good" to meet a real-life Prince.
