From Mary and Fred to Albert and Charlene: The royals who fell in love at the Olympics and share a passion for sport

The 2026 Winter Olympics, or the Milano Cortina 2026, is currently on and it's all everyone can talk about at the moment, having the world captivated.

A Norwegian Olympian also made headlines for his remarkable cheating admission after winning bronze at the games.

But the Olympics also has another interesting talking point; there have been plenty of royals over the years who have connections with the contest and more importantly; love stories related to the Olympics.

Nine.com.au takes a look at some of the famous royals who fell in love at the Olympics or around their love of sport.

This one has a connection that's close to home.

Our very own Queen Mary, then known as Mary Donaldson, met her soon-to-be husband at the Sydney Olympics back in 2000.

The Tasmanian-born Mary and then Prince Frederick are said to have met at Sydney's the Slip Inn, and she had no idea he was a royal.

They soon fell in love and married in 2004 in a match that has lasted the test of time.

"The first time that we met or shook hands, I did not know he was the Crown Prince of Denmark. It was perhaps half an hour or so later that someone came up to me and said, 'Do you know who these people are?'" she previously recalled in an old interview.

Before becoming a princess, Charlene, Princess of Monaco was an Olympic athlete – and a swimmer at that.

Born in Zimbabwe, she previously went by the name Charlene Wittstock.

The royal couple married back in 2011, but they met thanks to what seems to be a shared interest in sport.

The pair met at the Mare Nostrum swimming competition in Monte Carlo, Monaco in 2000.

Prince Albert also competed in five winter games, representing his country.

But it was in 2006 when they made headlines for making their romance public at the 2006 Turin Games.

Royal watchers can't believe it's been 20 years since the iconic moment.

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden

A royal love match!

King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden are said to have met in the '70s around the time of the 1972 Summer Olympic Games in Munich, Germany.

She was working during the games and he was visiting athletes and soon they fell in love.

They tied the knot in 1976.

Despite Anne, Princess Royal, 75, and first husband Captain Mark Phillips' marriage not lasting, they did have a connection over the Olympics.

Both represented their country in the Olympic Games and reportedly met at a party for horse enthusiasts in Mexico City.

They tied the knot back in 1973.

Although not at the Olympics, it's important to mention that Zara and husband Mike Tindall met during the Rugby World Cup in Manly, NSW, at a bar in 2003.
