Queen paying for repairs on private residence with her own money, unlike Harry and Meghan

The Queen's private residence in Sandringham is set to undergo some major repairs, but Her Majesty will be covering the bill with her own money.

The roof of the Sandringham Estate hasn't had anything done to it since it was first built in 1870.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the monarch, 92, will be footing the $900,000 (£500,000) bill, unlike the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

Sandringham House, which is open to visitors between April and October, reportedly has a notice up to tourists about the current works taking place.

"Works are under way on the north end of Sandringham House to repair a large area of lead roofing which has remained untouched since 1870 when the house was built," the message says.

"It is essential we carry out these works at this time of year when the weather is fair."

In June, Prince Harry and Meghan Markle came under fire for spending $4.4 million of UK taxpayers' money on renovating their Windsor residence, Frogmore Cottage.  

In the official accounts released by the royal family, it was detailed the Sussex home had been converted from five smaller houses, back into one large house after Harry and Meghan decided to move out of their Kensington Palace home in London.

Up until the beginning of this year, the couple had been living near the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in Nottingham Cottage, located on the grounds of Kensington Palace.

Harry and Meghan were offered Apartment 1, which is located next door to Kate and William in 1A, but decided to move to Windsor instead, which also resulted in extensive works taking place on their new home.

Renovations on Frogmore Cottage reportedly included new bathrooms, a new kitchen, installation of floating floorboards, full electrical rewiring, eco-heating, new gas and water mains and a complete redecoration.
