How the Queen will 'initiate' Meghan into the royal family

Even though Meghan Markle has been an official part of the royal family since May 19, there's still an important step she's yet to take.

Meghan will soon join Prince Harry for their first visit as a married couple to the royal family's summer home, Balmoral Castle, in Scotland.

The initial trip by any new royal is called the 'Balmoral test' and is thought to be an initiation of sorts into The Firm, undertaken by Meghan’s predecessors, including late mother-in-law Princess Diana.

Royal expert Richard Fitzwilliams says scoring an invite to the summer home is a significant step.

He told Express, "An invitation to Balmoral is traditionally part of the initiation into the Royal Family”.

Balmoral is said to be where Meghan was first introduced to the Queen, before her engagement to Harry, in September 2017.

"Meghan's relations with the Queen are excellent, especially after the success of their joint visit to Cheshire in June and the omens are extremely propitious for a highly successful visit," Fitzwilliams continues.

"Harry, after all, reportedly introduced Meghan to the Queen at Balmoral last September."

Balmoral also holds a special place in the hearts of both Prince Harry and Prince William. It is where they spent time immediately following the death of their mother in August 1997.

While the Queen is reportedly "most happiest" at the historic castle, Princess Diana allegedly quickly grew bored visiting the residence.

The Queen has been at Balmoral Castle since mid-July and is expected to remain there until the first week of October.

Princess Eugenie, who will marry in October, says her “Granny” loves the property and spends a lot of time there with her family and her dogs.

"It's the most beautiful place on earth," Princess Eugenie says. "I think Granny is the happiest there. Walks, picnics, dogs, a lot of dogs -- there's always dogs and people coming in and out all the time.

"Family-wise we're all there, so it's a lovely base for Granny and Grandpa to be - for us to come and see them up there where you just have room to breathe and run."
