Hidden detail in Queen Mary's outfit during royal state visit in Sweden

Queen Mary has made a nod to the royal women who preceded her with a small yet significant accessory as she attended a royal appointment in Sweden.

The Tasmanian-born Queen completed her outfit with an elegant sapphire brooch, which her Mother-In-Law Queen Margarethe II gifted her eighteen years ago.

She received the piece as a gift after the birth of her youngest son, Prince Christian in October 2005.

Named the Connaught Sapphire Brooch, the piece has been passed down through generations of the Danish Royal family.

It's place in the Danish Royal family can be traced back to 1879 when Princess Louise Marguerite of Prussia received it as a gift after marrying Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught.

After her death in 1920, Crown Princess Margareta of Sweden inherited the jewel and later passed it onto her daughter who became Queen Ingrid of Denmark.

Queen Ingrid then passed it onto her daughter Queen Margarethe before finally landing into Queen Mary's possession.

Mary wore the brooch for the first time at her son Christian's christening in January, 2006 and has since worn it on several occasions.

Queen Mary spoke about being gifted the historic piece in the documentary De Kongelige Juveler (The Royal Jewels).

"Some people learn history through wars or famous people, but jewellery is just as good a possibility to learn history," Queen Mary says in the documentary.

"It shows how the families have married through the generations. And it doesn't only talk about lineage, but it also relates to personal events in families."

The heirloom brooch incorporates a large faceted sapphire set in a frame of diamonds complete with swags of pearls, and a floral and pearl drop.

It is believed that the peals were a later addition to the centuries-old piece.
