Queen Margrethe of Denmark makes special request for her 80th birthday

Queen Margrethe II is set to celebrate her 80th birthday next week.

However, the milestone birthday on April 16 will go by with very little fanfare as celebrations have been cancelled due to the coronavirus crisis.

But the head of the Danish Royal Family is still trying to spread joy and bring a smile to the people on her big day, by making one special request of the public.

"The Queen receives flowers every year on her birthday from near and far," a statement from the Palace said.

"This year, the Queen is calling for a bouquet to be sent to one of the many senior citizens who are facing particular difficulties during this time. "

The sweet sentiment is bound to brighten homes and lives across the country.

Another tradition that will change this year, according to Palace officials, is "the opportunity to personally meet to write congratulations in the Yellow Palace".

Instead, they will have a section on the official Danish Royal Family website where people can post their well-wishes.

Queen Margrethe, who has been on the throne since 1972, officially cancelled her birthday celebrations on March 12, "in light of the spread of COVID-19 and the consequences for society".

There was originally set to be a carriage procession, reception at Copenhagen City Hall and a private dinner and dance at Fredensborg Castle for Her Majesty's big day.

In lieu of these usual celebrations outside Amalienborg Palace in Copenhagen, already 170,000 people across Denmark have pledged online to sing for their Queen at midday.

The Facebook group titled Danmark synger for dronningen (or Denmark sings for the Queen) is coordinating the singalong.

The page tells their fellow country men and women they should still be marking the milestone but from "the proper Corona distance"

"At noon we sing - on balconies, out the window, in gardens, workplaces - where we are now," the group description says.

"When Corona has closed for the official party - we have to mark the day ourselves!

"Raise the flag, waving the flag - share the day with family, children, grandchildren, etc. - at the proper Corona distance."
