Queen Maxima, Queen Letizia and Queen Mathilde chose bold looks for busy day of royal events

Amid all the dramas within the British royal family, Europe's leading ladies are immune to the chaos happening across borders.

Three of the region's queens have attended engagements in their respective countries, kicking off what's set to be a busy year for each of them.

King Willem-Alexander, 52, of the Netherlands and his wife Queen Maxima hosted the first of their New Year's receptions at the royal palace in Amsterdam.

Queen Maxima, 48, wore a blue dress by Natan and chose perfectly matching sapphire earrings and a ring, along with blue stilettos, for the occasion.

The Dutch royals hosted hundreds of guests from both the political and public sectors with a special focus on those who work in the public transport industry.

"You ensure that the Netherlands can keep moving," King Willem-Alexander told the audience. "And in a way that is friendly to the environment and climate."

Tomorrow, the Dutch royals will welcome members of the diplomatic corps and foreign diplomats to the palace.

Nearby in Belgium, the nation's king and queen hosted their own New Year's reception inside the royal palace in Brussels.

King Philippe, 59, and Queen Mathilde, 46, shook hands with diplomatic ambassadors to Belgium.

The Queen stood out in a floral dress by Natan and aquamarine earrings.

The royal couple recently celebrated their 20th wedding anniversary and shared two new photos taken outside Chateau of Laeken, the official residence of the Belgian royal family, in the capital.

A little further away, in Spain, Queen Letizia had a busy morning hosting several receptions without husband King Felipe.

Letizia, 47, welcomed female members of the Soledad Cazorla Prieto, a foundation honouring the work of Soledad Cazorla, the first Spanish prosecutor against gender violence.

The queen also met with Spain's federation of cinematographic distributors, FEDICINE.

Letizia chose a bold look for the occasion, wearing knee-high boots, a Hugo Boss blouse and poppy-print Carolina Herrera skirt.

The receptions took place inside the Zarzuela Palace, near Madrid, which is the official home of King Felipe, 51, and his family.
