Queen Elizabeth makes her first video call, alongside Princess Anne

Queen Elizabeth has taken part in her first video call.

Her Majesty held her first ever virtual royal engagement from the Oak Room at Windsor Castle, joining her daughter Princess Anne to chat with carers across the country to mark Carers Week 2020.

"I'm very glad to have been able to join you today," the 94-year-old said at the end, with a grin.

On the video chat, the monarch is listed not by name but as 'Windsor, UK' and is seen firmly in the centre of the screen.

The Queen and the Princess Royal, President of Carers Trust, spoke with carers Alex, Amna, Mary and Nadia, who all look after family members.

They heard about "the challenge of juggling their own physical and mental health with that of their loved ones".

Her Majesty is the last working member of the royal family to take part in digital duties during the coronavirus pandemic.

But according to royal commentator Katie Nicholl, this won't be the status quo going forward - we will see a return to engagements in person, especially by Her Majesty.

"We're not going to have remote royals, we're going to have hands-on royals meeting the public, we'll have garden parties again," Nicholl told 9Honey recently.

"The Queen has always said she needs to be seen to be believed and I think that will never be more relevant than when this is all over.

"People will want to see the monarch and she will be out promoting Britain, showing unity and supporting the nation in person, as soon as it's safe for her to do so and I think that's the same for all of the royals."

During the coronavirus pandemic, the 94-year-old has had a couple of other royals firsts as well.

There was the release of a phone call between Her Majesty and a nurse to mark International Nurses Day, and a photo of the monarch on the phone to UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson after lockdowns began, the first time an Audience with the Prime Minister has been photographed.
