Hearts broke when it was revealed Prince Harry, despite being in the United Kingdom, missed his last embrace with his grandmother the Queen by just 90 minutes.

Queen Elizabeth II's death was announced to the public at approximately 3.30am AEST on Friday September 9, with Harry arriving at Balmoral at 5am AEST. He was the last of his relatives to arrive, and he arrived alone – despite reports Meghan Markle was joining him.

It's now been revealed by sources claiming to be close to the situation that the 38-year-old Duke of Sussex had insisted the Duchess of Sussex be at Balmoral, but King Charles called him and said it was "not appropriate."

Harry then missed an RAF flight to Scotland that was carrying Prince William, Prince Andrew, Prince Edward and Sophie, Countess of Wessex, as he was told to make his own travel arrangements and flew to Aberdeen Airport without Meghan, landing approximately five minutes after the Queen's death was announced.

It's been reported the duke was informed of his grandmother's death by his father five minutes before it was announced to the world.

King Charles and his sister Princess Anne were reportedly by their mother's side when she died, and William, Andrew, Edward and Sophie arrived after her death. Harry was the last to arrive, and the first to leave the next morning.

When the duke arrived at Balmoral, insiders claim he declined dinner at Birkhall, his father's home on the estate, which the King, Camilla, Queen Consort and William were attending.

Instead, Harry opted to dine with Andrew, Edward and Sophie at Balmoral Castle, which is approximately 11 kilometres away. It has been previously reported, however, that Charles and William likely used their time dining separately from the group to discuss the new succession plan about to unfold as the new King and new heir-apparent.

OPINION: 'Meghan simply doesn't deserve this vitriol'

"Harry was so busy trying to get Meghan to Balmoral and rowing with his family that he missed the flight," a source told The Sun.

"Charles has an open invitation for Harry to dine with him whenever he is in the country. But Harry was so furious that he refused to eat with his father and brother.

"It was a massive snub. And he got out of Balmoral at the earliest opportunity to catch the first commercial flight back to London."

The duke caught a 9.45am flight to Heathrow Airport on the morning of Friday September 9 London time (Friday night Australia time), about 15 hours after the Queen's death was announced to the world. He then reunited with the Duchess of Sussex at Windsor's Frogmore Cottage.

The next day, William reportedly asked the Sussexes to join him and the Princess of Wales on a walkabout in Windsor, which they did.

Harry and Meghan then attended a series of official events during the mourning period, and flew home on Tuesday, 24 hours after the Queen's state funeral.
