Why Prince George wore a blue suit to Queen Elizabeth's funeral

Prince George has worn a blue suit to his great-grandmother's funeral, what might have seemed an unexpected choice amongst a sea of traditional black regularly worn by mourners.

However, the eldest child of the Prince and Princess of Wales isn't the only British royal to choose to wear navy during the days the family has spent grieving their loss since Queen Elizabeth died on September 8.

In fact, Prince William's military uniform, worn to the funeral at Westminster Abbey on Monday, was also navy, his RAF No 1 uniform previously worn at the Golden Jubilee, Diamond Jubilee and Platinum Jubilee.

The Prince of Wales also wore a blue suit while viewing tributes with the Princess of Wales at Sandringham on September 15 – perhaps the same suit he wore during his walkabout with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex at Windsor Castle earlier in the week, where Prince Harry also chose navy.

It is understood dark blue is an acceptable choice for male members of the royal family during periods of mourning.

Female members of the family have adhered to traditional black, and will do so until the official period of mourning ends a week after Her Majesty's state funeral.
