Prince Louis has been asking whether he will still be able to "play games" with the Queen at Balmoral, the Princess of Wales has revealed.

Catherine spoke about how her three children were coping with the death of their great-grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II.

The princess made the comments to Australia's Governor-General David Hurley at Buckingham Palace on Saturday.

Hurley recalled his conversation with Catherine, which gave an insight into how Prince George, nine, Princess Charlotte, seven, and Prince Louis, four, were dealing with the family's loss.

He said Prince George was "sort of now realising how important his great-grandmother was and what is going on".

But Prince Louis doesn't quite understand.

He's been asking about whether the family's visits to Balmoral Castle will still be the same, Hurley said.

"The younger one is now asking questions like, 'do you think we can still play these games when we go to Balmoral and things like that, cause she's not going to be there?'"

The Queen died at Balmoral Castle, her residence in the Scottish Highlands, on Thursday September 8.

Just weeks earlier, Prince William and Catherine and their children had spent time with the Queen at Balmoral as part of their annual summer break.

On Thursday, the Princess of Wales said her children were "being looked after at school" when asked how they were dealing with the loss.

Catherine made the comments to well-wishers outside the gates of Sandringham House where she and Prince William viewed floral tributes left to the late Queen.

"They're well thank you very much, they're being looked after at school so, they are in a routine and are being looked after," Catherine said, in a video filmed by 9Honey's royal reporter Natalie Oliveri.

On the day of the Queen's death, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis had their first full day at their new school, Lambrook, in Windsor.

Days later, the Princess of Wales spoke about Prince Louis during a walkabout in Windsor where she was joined by Prince William and the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

She said to a member of the crowd: "Louis said, 'At least Grannie is with Great-Grandpa now'."
