Queen Elizabeth visits set of UK soap opera Coronation Street

The red carpet was rolled out as Queen Elizabeth made a visit to the set of popular UK soap Coronation Street.

Her Majesty got a rousing welcome to Media City UK in Manchester with cast and crew lining the carpet and waving Union Jack flags.

The 95-year-old undertook the engagement solo, viewing sets and meeting some of the 300 cast and crew on the show, which is the world's longest-running soap after premiering more than 60 years ago.

The Queen was greeted outside the famous pub Rovers Return Inn with bows and curtsies from some of the show's actors - Bill Roache, Barbara Knox, Sue Nicholls and Helen Worth.

The show, which airs in more than 105 countries and is broadcast six times a week, adapted its filming processes during the coronavirus pandemic to allow production to continue.

After asking how they'd found filming during the past year, the monarch said it was "really marvellous you've been able to carry on".

"Well, ma'am, you're the one who has carried on," Roache, who was a former officer with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, replied.

The Queen was given a tour around the set, which features the inside of the famous pub.

Walking down the famous cobbled streets of the fictitious northern town of Weatherfield, the monarch met with young actresses who told her about the "troublesome" storylines that often play out on the drama.

"Well life is a trouble," Her Majesty quipped.

The Coronation Street production site is 3.1 hectares and is the biggest single television production facility of its kind in the world.

Corrie, as it's also known, marked its 60th anniversary on December 9, 2020, while the Queen was still isolating at Windsor Castle, delaying the official celebrations until now.

Her Majesty last visited the set of the ITV show almost 40 years ago, at its original studios in Manchester in 1982. The soap moved to the studios in Trafford in 2013.
