The Queen gives up driving just months after Prince Philip’s crash

Just months after Prince Philip was involved in a harrowing car crash, the Queen has given up driving at the advice of her security team.

Her Majesty is the only person in the UK who is legally allowed to drive without a license – as all UK licenses are issued in her name – but she is giving up the privilege at 92 years old.

She has decided to relinquish her right to drive on private roads, though she'll still be able to get behind the wheel on private grounds at her various palaces, homes and estates.

It's understood that she made the decision based on advice from her security team, though it may be a tough choice for the Queen, who is regularly spotted in the driver's seat of her many Jaguars, Land Rovers and Range Rovers.

But the decision is a timely one, coming just months after her husband gave up his own license.

In January, the Duke of Edinburgh was involved in a collision near the royal family's Sandringham Estate, leaving one passenger from the other car injured.

Following the crash questions were raised about whether or not the Duke should still be allowed behind the wheel, and he surrendered his drivers license just weeks after the crash.

Now he is chauffeured to and from events, with the Queen set to join him now that she too has given up driving.

The royals have also faced criticism for their family habit of not wearing seat belts, though it has been suggested that it's for security reasons, allowing royals to escape a car quickly in the case of a security threat.

It was also revealed that several royal family members have had the seat belt alarms deactivated in their cars.
