Sweden's Princess Sofia has given birth to a baby girl, the Royal Court has announced.

The 40-year-old royal welcomed her new arrival on Friday at 1.10pm (11.10pm AEDT) at Danderyd Hospital in Stockholm.

The baby is the fourth child - and first daughter - for Princess Sofia and her husband Prince Carl Philip, who is fourth in line to the Swedish throne.

Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia are also known as the Duke and Duchess of Värmland.

Princess Sofia married Prince Carl Philip on June 13, 2015. She is believed to have met her prince at a nightclub having been introduced by mutual friends.

Several years before, Sofia had made a name for herself in Sweden after appearing in a men's magazine and then on reality television.

Their wedding, inside the Royal Chapel at the Royal Palace of Stockholm, was attended by royalty from across Europe and the UK.

Since the wedding, Princess Sofia has maintained a busy diary representing the monarchy at official events both with her husband and on solo engagements.

She and Prince Carl Philip have a foundation, The Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia Foundation, with two main areas of focus – online safety for children and increasing understanding for those with dyslexia, a condition the prince has as does his father, the King.

Prince Carl Philip is the second child of the King and Queen. His elder sister, Crown Princess Victoria, is heir to the throne. She and husband Prince Daniel have two children, Princess Estelle and Prince Oscar.
