The Swedish royal family has issued a brief update about the health of Prince Carl Philip and Princess Sofia, after they were diagnosed with coronavirus.

The royal couple is currently isolating at their home, Villa Solbacken, in Stockholm.

They were diagnosed with COVID-19 last week after suffering "mild flu-like symptoms".

Prince Carl, 41, and Princess Sofia, 35, are in isolation with their two sons, Prince Alexander, four, and Prince Gabriel, three.

In an update shared overnight, the Royal Palace said: "The prince and princess are fine under the circumstances".

They are being treated by the royal family's Mårten Rosenqvist.

Prince Carl is the middle child of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden.

They, along with his eldest sister Crown Princess Victoria and her husband Prince Daniel, were all tested for the virus with the results coming back negative.

Sweden has been hit hard by the global pandemic and has been criticised for its anti-lockdown approach, amid mounting numbers of deaths and new cases.

On Thursday, the government announced 6,485 new infections and 33 more deaths.

Throughout the pandemic, the Swedish royals have continued to carry out engagements with the majority of them done virtually.

However, Prince Carl and Princess Sofia, and Crown Princess Victoria, have been out meeting members of the public while wearing masks and keeping their distance.

Princess Sofia has also been working in the Sophiahemmet hospital in Stockholm after taking a three-day intensive medical course earlier this year.

Sofia has been assisting hospital staff with non-medical related tasks to ease the burden on doctors and nurses.
