The palace didn't give an update on Princess Mary's condition but said no other members of the family were currently infected.

As a result of the test and in-line with current guidelines in Denmark, Princess Mary is now isolating at home but away from husband Prince Frederik and their four children - Prince Christian, 16; Princess Isabella, 14; and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, 10.

It's expected that the Aussie-born royal will be able to reunite with her family on Christmas Day, with the isolation rules ending after 10 days in Denmark.

The COVID-19 situation across Denmark has already forced the royal family to cancel their traditional New Year's Day functions.

A spokesperson for the royal household said in a statement issued last week that the changes were "in continuation of the government and the health authorities' latest announcements about the corona situation."

Princess Mary isn't the first one in her family to test positive for coronavirus - eldest son Prince Christian tested positive last December after an outbreak at his school.
