Princess Mary and her family have put up their Christmas tree, with a little help from their pet horses.

The Danish Crown Princess, husband Crown Prince Frederik and their four children were seen decorating the huge tree inside the stables at Christiansborg Palace, in Copenhagen.

A video was shared to the palace's official Instagram account with the message, "a joyous Christmas greeting from the Crown Prince family".

It begins with Mary, Frederik, Prince Christian, Princess Isabella and twins Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine walking into the stables and then feeding their beautiful white and grey horses with carrots.

They then begin to decorate the tree, with Crown Prince Frederik using a ladder to put the gold star at the very top.

Mary helps her children place the ornaments on the branches, taking care to ensure they are distributed evenly.

And then, still within the stables, the Crown Prince family set a table for tea complete with porcelain cups and saucers featuring festive motifs.

They attempted to dine on scones with jam and cream but the curious, and hungry, horses crash the tea party and help themselves to the sweet treats. Perhaps they were enticed to the table by a cheeky Prince Vincent, who appeared to flick some sugar onto the table for the horses.

The Danish royals love Christmas, especially Queen Margrethe who recently launched an interactive Advent Calendar giving a rare look at spaces within the family's residences around Denmark, often revealing rooms and areas normally off-limits to the public.

Princess Mary and her family will celebrate Christmas Day with the Queen at Marselisborg Palace in Aarhus, north-west of Copenhagen. The Danish royals have spent Christmas at Marselisborg since 1972 when Margrethe ascended the throne.

Prince Frederik's brother Prince Joachim, his wife Princess Marie and their children will also be in attendance.
