Princess Mary's family Christmas tree has one major difference to yours at home

Princess Mary has offered a glimpse of her life inside Amalienborg Palace.

The Australian Princess took the photo of their festive Christmas tree, which was shared on the Danish Royal Family's official Instagram account.

The large tree was put up and decorated in time for "Christmas party in the Knights Hall in Frederik VIII's Palace, Amalienborg, here on the third Sunday in advent."

If last year's decorating video released by the Palace is anything to go by, Princess Mary, Prince Frederik and their four children - Prince Christian, Princess Isabella, Princess Josephine and Prince Vincent - all put up the array of baubles themselves.

And it looks like there are baubles that honour Mary's Aussie heritage, with a kangaroo and joey spotted in the clip hanging on the tree.

However, there is one thing very different about their Christmas tree compared to the average household - there are no fairy lights.

In fact, the festive lights are courtesy of candles hung off each branch, which are lit on Christmas Eve when the whole family are there, according to Danish tradition.

The decorations weren't limited to the Christmas tree, with some pine cones and gold glass baubles visible on the marble side table.

It'll be a different Christmas for the Danish Royals this year, who will stay in Europe for the holidays and mark their first Christmas without patriarch Prince Henrik, who passes away in February.
