Husband of Norway's Princess Märtha Louise issues scathing condemnation after racist killing

The American-born husband of Norway's Märtha Louise has issued a scathing condemnation towards the perpetrator of a sickening attack which left a woman dead.

Shaman Durek Verrett, who is black, said "enough is enough" while calling for "no more hate" following the racist-fuelled killing.

A 34-year-old woman from Ethiopia was murdered while working at a youth welfare centre in Oslo last week, with the 18-year-old accused telling police the attack was politically motivated.

The alleged attacker, who has a history of right-wing extremism, has been charged with murder and terrorism.

"We believe he had an intention of creating fear," prosecutor Philip Green of the Oslo Police District said.

In response, Verrett shared an emotionally-driven message on his Instagram page titled "a letter to Norway and the world".

"I write with love and urgency," he said, adding the victim was killed "not because she lacked worth, but because her worth was denied by racism".

"Racism is not a foreign problem. It is here. It walks your streets. Until it is faced, it will keep growing like a shadow.

"To my brothers and sisters of colour in Norway and the world. Silence does not protect you. Your voice is medicine. Speak and share your truth.

"Martha Louise and I will not stand silent. Not now. Not ever. We love Norway and the world too much to let hate steal the future."

Verrett has been subjected to racist abuse because of his relationship with Princess Märtha Louise, the eldest daughter of King Harald V and Queen Sonja.

They married in August last year, defying their critics. Theirs was the first royal wedding in Norway in 22 years, since that of Crown Prince Haakon and Mette-Marit.

In 2022, the royal family had to issue a statement condemning the racism directed online at Verrett.

"The racist attitudes Durek Verrett has been subjected to, especially on social media, we strongly oppose," Norway's royal house said.

"It is a strength that the royal family reflects the ethnic diversity that exists in Norway."

Princess Märtha Louise commented on her husband's post, showing her support.

"We must stand firm in love, foster understanding, and build bridges that honour and connect our diverse backgrounds so tragedies like the killing of Tamima Nibras Juhars's never happen again," she said.

The couple has also been subject to controversy for their business ventures.

Verrett describes himself as a shaman and a healer on his website and has been criticised for promoting alternative health care methods.

In November 2022, Märtha Louise confirmed she would no longer represent her father or the royal household following anger over the use of her 'princess' title among her commercial endeavours.

Since then, there have been growing calls for Märtha Louise to lose her 'princess' title altogether after allegations she broke the agreement with the king and the royal household multiple times.
