The 13 people who attended Princess Diana's statue unveiling ceremony

Prince William and Prince Harry unveiled a statue of their late mother Princess Diana on Thursday at an intimate ceremony attended by a dozen people.

The brothers were joined by members of Princess Diana's family, including brother Charles Spencer and sisters Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

Also in attendance at the unveiling in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace were members of the committee that commissioned the statue, as well as the sculptor himself and the garden's designer.

Members of the committee included: chairman Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton – former private secretary to both William and Harry, Gerry Farrell, Guy Monson, John Barnes from Historic Royal Palaces and Julia Samuel, who is Diana's close friend and Prince George's godmother.

Chair of Historic Royal Palaces Rupert Gavin attended the ceremony as did sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley and garden designer Pip Morrison.

Notably absent from the proceedings were William's and Harry's families.

Meghan Markle, having recently given birth, was back in Los Angeles with children Archie and Lilibet.

Kate Middleton, who lives at Kensington Palace, where the event took place, did not attend with their three children, Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

Also not in attendance was Diana's ex-husband and father of her sons, Prince Charles.

"I think that very much complies or follows the Prince's stance when it comes to these milestone anniversaries and these commemorative anniversaries and occasions because Charles, in that respect, is damned if he does and damned if he doesn't turn up," royal commentator Katie Nicholl told 9Honey on the eve of the unveiling.

"I think he took the decision some time ago that it was the right thing to leave it to his sons to mark the occasions they wanted to, the way they wanted to do it."

It's understood the reduced capacity event was due to current coronavirus restrictions in the UK.

However, the brothers also wanted to keep the event intimate to ensure all the focus stayed on their mother on what would have been her 60th birthday.
