Princess Alexia of the Netherlands to move to London for university

London is calling for a member of the Dutch royal family, who is leaving the Netherlands to further her studies.

Princess Alexia will relocate to England for three years, enrolling at the University College London (UCL).

Her stint at the college will begin at the end of September, the Royal House of the Netherlands announced.

Princess Alexia, 19, is the second daughter of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima.

She will study a bachelor's degree in Science and Engineering for Social Change at the Faculty of Engineering, the palace said.

And it won't be the first time Alexia will have spent a significant amount of time in the UK.

In May last year, she graduated from the UWC Atlantic College in Wales receiving her International Baccalaureate after two years.

Her father attended the same school between 1983 and 1985, based at the 12th-century St. Donat's Castle on the southern coast of Wales.

Princess Leonor, heir to the Spanish throne, also graduated alongside Princess Alexia at the same time.

The King and Queen of the Netherlands, Willem-Alexander and Maxima, and Spain's King Felipe and Queen Letizia, attended the graduation ceremony.

Princess Alexia is said to have struggled with the decision of where to continue her study once she graduated from UWC.

In June, during a summer photo call with her family, Princess Alexia admitted she was "a bit stressed about choosing" where to study, and what course.

After her two years at UWC, Alexia took 12 months off for "a bit of travelling, working, and all sorts of things", Dutch publication the NL Times reported.

In September last year, Princess Alexia undertook her first solo engagement – attending the opening ceremony for Rotterdam's VOX Alexia, named in her honour.

Her elder sister and heir to the throne, Princess Catharina-Amalia, chose to stay in the Netherlands to study.

In 2022 she enrolled in the Politics, Psychology, Law and Economics bachelor's programme at the University of Amsterdam.

But following a number of serious security threats made to Princess Amalia, including fears she was the target of a kidnapping plot, she moved out of her apartment and relocated to Spain.

At the time, Willem-Alexander said the situation was "really very difficult".

Queen Maxima added, "It has enormous consequences for her life...it means that she's not living in Amsterdam and that she can't really go outside".

Princess Amalia has since returned to the the royal family's residence, Huis ten Bosch, at The Hague.

King Williem-Alexander and Queen Maxima's youngest daughter, Princess Ariane, 17, is currently studying at the UWC's Adriatic campus in Italy. She began the two-year International Baccalaureate in August, 2023.
