Prince William reveals the worst gift he ever bought Kate Middleton – and why she won't let him live it down

Prince William has revealed the worst gift he's ever bought Kate Middleton, back when they were dating.

While the present was a doozy, the couple are now married with three kids, so clearly it wasn't a dealbreaker. But the Duke of Cambridge says the Duchess won't let him live it down.

"I did get my wife a pair of binoculars once – she's never let me forget that," the 38-year-old told BBC Radio Five Live's That Peter Crouch Podcast.

"That was early on in the courtship that was – think that sealed the deal.

" I wrapped them. They were really nice. I was trying to convince myself about it. I was like, 'but these are really amazing, look how far you can see!'

"She was looking at me going, 'they're binoculars, what's going on?'. It didn't go well.

"Honestly I have no idea why I bought her a pair of binoculars."

The topic came up during a wide-ranging interview with Peter Crouch, Tom Fordyce and Chris Stark, which was recorded at Kensington Palace in March, before the coronavirus pandemic sent the UK into lockdown.

During the chat ex-Premier League striker Crouch revealed he'd bought his wife, model and TV personality Abbey Clancy, a raincoat three years in a row.

Of course at the heart of the special podcast recording was a cause Prince William is passionate about supporting – men's mental health.

The 38-year-old recorded the episode as part of his Heads Up initiative, which he launched last May, bringing together the Football Association (which Prince William is President of) and The Royal Foundation's Heads Together charity.
