Prince William and Kate Middleton celebrate special anniversary

Prince William and Kate Middleton have celebrated a special anniversary.

Friday marked eight years since the couple announced their engagement on November 16, 2010, which came eight years after they started dating at St. Andrew's University in Scotland in 2002.

The actual proposal by the heir-to-the-throne, using Princess Diana's sapphire and diamond engagement ring, actually took place a month earlier during the couple's holidaying in Kenya.

"It was a total shock when it came," Kate admitted during the official engagement interview, adding: "There’s a true romantic in there."

While William explained his choice of ring, saying: "Obviously, she’s not going be around to share in all the fun and excitement, so this is my way of keeping her close to it all".

The announcement of their engagement was also the start of what's become known as the Kate Effect - the ability for anything the Duchess wears to sell out.

Kate's royal blue wrap dress by UK designer Issa sold out within hours and the designer struggled to keep up with her new found fame and demand for her clothing.

The couple's official engagement photos were taken by Mario Testino - famous photographer and friend of mother-of-the-groom, Princess Diana.

And hasn't a lot happened since then?!

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge wed at Westminster Abbey in April of 2011 and welcomed their first child, Prince George, in 2013.

Two years later, in 2015, the couple welcomed daughter Princess Charlotte and extended the family by one more earlier this year, with the arrival of Prince Louis in April.

The now parents-to-three, the couple are taking on more and more official Royal engagements after Prince Philip's retirement and as The Queen slows down in her role.

November also marks the month Prince Harry and Meghan Markle announced their engagement, with the first anniversary of that day coming up on November 27.
