William and Kate admit they're 'still trying' to make Christmas plans amid UK restrictions

Residents of the UK are in quite a pickle this Christmas, courtesy of the government's COVID-19 gathering restrictions for the festive season.

With 'bubbles' limited to a maximum of three households, there are some tricky decisions to be made — and it seems the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are still hashing it out.

During a visit to Cardiff this week, part of their three-day Royal Train tour, Prince William admitted the family's Christmas plans are yet to come together.

"It is so difficult. We are still trying to make plans. It's difficult to know what to do for the best," he told a group of university students.

One of the students told journalists afterwards the future king had said he wasn't "100 per cent sure" where he would be spending the festive season.

The comment comes days after Buckingham Palace confirmed the Queen and Prince Philip would not be spending Christmas at their Sandringham estate for the first time in 32 years.

"Having considered all the appropriate advice, the Queen and The Duke of Edinburgh have decided that this year they will spend Christmas quietly in Windsor," a spokesperson said.

Usually, the couple are joined at Sandringham by several members of their extended family, including William, Kate and their children Prince George, Princess Charlotte and Prince Louis.

There, they attend a Christmas Day church service before enjoying festivities on the estate, including a grouse shoot on Boxing Day.

However, the government's 'festive bubble' requirement put paid to that plan, as only three households are permitted to gather between December 23 and December 27.

It's not yet known whether any royal family members will be joining Her Majesty and Prince Philip at Windsor Castle for their Christmas celebrations.

Since their 2011 wedding, William and Kate have missed Sandringham Christmas twice to spend the holidays with the Middleton family in Bucklebury.

However, as Carole and Michael Middleton have three children — Kate, Pippa and James — they, too, will need to choose who will be included in their bubble.

The duke and duchess may opt to spend Christmas with their children at Kensington Palace, or their country home Anmer Hall, where they isolated for much of 2020.
