Prince William's incredible gesture to a homeless man

Prince William has made a heartfelt vow to an injured homeless man during a visit to The Beacon Project on Wednesday.

William, 37, was at the centre for homeless and vulnerable people during a day of official engagements in Nottinghamshire.

During the visit he met ex-serviceman Delroy Carr, 58, who told the Duke of Cambridge about having his right leg amputated above the knee as a result of drug use 11 years ago.

He then told Prince William about a friend who also frequents the centre, Daniel Walker, who also had an amputation and had recently lost his prosthetic limb.

Hello! reports Carr told the Duke how he lost his friend's prosthetic limb, saying: "His [Delroy's] leg from the hospital rubbed and he was getting really bad sores, so I said I'd take it home, put the angle grinder on it and run it down a little bit for you.

"I've gone to work, because I worked as a binman, and I've come back and I've gone [to his partner] 'Babe, where's Delly's leg gone?' She went 'That horrible thing you left in the garage? - it freaked me out, it's horrible'. I said, 'well where is it?', and she went 'Dustbin men took it – your mates came round earlier'. And I went 'oh my God', I've lost Delly's false leg."

He then added: "He's never had one since - nine years. He's been hopping mad for nine years."

It was then that Prince William vowed to help out. He told Carr he would personally ensure that his details were given to the Defence Medical Rehabilitation Centre (DMRC) for ex-service personnel, to help his friend obtain a new prosthetic limb.

Carr said he'd been homeless for the past two years and was 'clean' following a long battle with substance addiction.

After meeting with Prince William, Carr said: "He's a good man. He seems very genuine and really wants to help."

The Beacon Project began in 2001 in St Johns Church, Mansfield, when five homeless people came into the church for tea and toast. It now has a dedicated building to serve and care for up to 50 people at a time.

Those seeking help can access meals, clean clothes and access to bathroom facilities as well as medical care and help to find accommodation.

Earlier, the Duke visited Tarmac – the UK's leading sustainable building materials and construction solutions business. There he met the company's young apprentices to learn more about their roles and career ambitions, before officially opening their new National Skills and Safety Park.
