Why William once considered dropping out of university after just one term

Prince William has been praised for his dedication to the monarchy, but it turns out he wasn't so dedicated to university when he first started his studies.

The Duke of Cambridge attended St Andrew's University in Fife, Scotland, where he would eventually meet and begin dating Kate Middleton.

Though the prestigious school would prove a formative place for the royal, he allegedly found uni life incredibly boring in his first weeks.

William "had not anticipated quite how 'boring' - his word - life in a small Scottish seaside town could be" wrote Robert Lacey in his new book, Battle of Brothers.

According to him, the Duke had little to do in the town of Fife and struggled with the pressures of being the only royal on campus.

It meant all eyes were on him, and William was unable to have the usual freedom new university students experienced.

That's why he reportedly travelled home to London almost every weekend in his first term, and by Christmas – just a few months after he began his course – William wanted to drop out.

William allegedly began making plans to transfer to a different university in a bigger city, perhaps Edinburgh.

But his father, Prince Charles, wasn't keen on the idea and neither was William's grandfather, Prince Philip.

In fact, the 99-year-old reportedly said of the matter: "William needs to knuckle down and not wimp out".

Not to mention there would be huge public backlash if William was seen to "quit" uni after just one term.

"It would have been a personal disaster for William, he would have been seen as a quitter," Lacey added.

Instead, royal aides worked with the university to move William out of his art history course and into a geography major, while Charles sat him down for a "fatherly" chat.

Thankfully, everything worked out in time and William returned to St Andrew's, where he continued to study and eventually earned his degree.

Not to mention he met Kate, who is now his wife and will one day support him as King, with her in the role of Queen Consort.
