When Prince William and Kate Middleton split in April 2007 after four years of dating, royal followers were disappointed. It would have been a happy ending for William, who'd felt an outpouring of sympathy and support from the world following the death of his mother, Princess Diana, in a Paris car crash in 1997.

William and Kate met at the University of St Andrews in Scotland, where they were housemates, and before long things turned romantic.

The couple seemed headed for the altar when they abruptly split, reportedly when the prince began having second thoughts about their future.

Thankfully, they reunited in June after two months, and the rest, as we all know, is royal history. The couple were married in 2011 and have three children together; Prince George, seven, Princess Charlotte, five, and Prince Louis, three.

Further details of the couple's reunion have since been revealed with a friend of William, Sam Waley-Cohen, reportedly helping the pair reunite.

Kate was understandably hurt over the split, and was pictured hitting the town with her girlfriends to help heal her broken heart. When William asked for a reunion, she was reluctant to trust him again.

The Daily Mail reports Waley-Cohen as bridging the gap between the pair, inviting them both to a "Freakin' Naughty" dress-up party. Prince William reportedly dressed as a policeman in hot pants, and Kate as a nurse wearing fishnet tights.

"Tastelessly, there were blow-up dolls hanging from the ceiling and sexy waitresses serving lethal cocktails," the publication reports.

"Outside was a bouncy castle and plunge pool, but William and Kate stuck to the dancefloor, and that night, she stayed at his barracks."

Prince William later spoke of their break-up, saying, "We were both very young… We were both finding ourselves and being different characters. It was very much trying to find our own way and we were growing up, so it was just a bit of space and it worked out for the better."

The photo that confirmed their reunion was taken at Wembley Stadium at an event to mark the 10th anniversary of Princess Diana's death on July 7, attended by 63,000 people.

Kate and William's wedding in 2011 was credited with sparking renewed interest in the British royal family, appealing to a younger fanbase.

Now that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have resigned as senior working members of the British royal family, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have become even more important to the stability of the British royals.
