Prince Philip involved in car crash near Queen's estate

The Duke of Edinburgh has been involved in a car crash close to the Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

Prince Philip was behind the wheel of a Land Rover shortly before 3pm UK time on Thursday afternoon when it was struck by another car as he pulled out of a driveway onto the A149.

The force of impact caused the 97-year-old’s vehicle to overturn, but the Duke was uninjured.

Eyewitnesses told the BBC he appeared shaken and in shock when they helped him from his car.

In a statement, Norfolk Police said the two female passengers in the other vehicle, a Kia, were treated for minor injuries, with the driver suffering cuts and the passenger sustaining an arm injury.

Both were taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in King's Lynn for treatment and have since been discharged.

According to the BBC, the Duke is back at Sandringham and has been seen by a doctor as a precaution.

One witness has described seeing the Queen's husband's Land Rover on its side following the crash, with the second vehicle "well into the hedge" on the opposite side of the road.

"There was lots of debris in the road, lots of glass and lots of other cars, some police cars, some from the Sandringham Estate and about six ordinary looking cars that looked as though they had stopped to help," Nick Cobb tells the BBC.

"The road was not blocked by the crash and was open when we came past."

Norfolk Police confirmed the road remained open and that the two vehicles involved in the crash were recovered not long after the incident.

They also stated both Prince Philip and the other driver were breath tested, with negative readings for both.

In August 2017 Prince Philip retired from public life.

The Queen and the Duke have been staying at Sandringham estate since late December.

Sandringham House is the Queen’s private country house in Norfolk more than 170kms north of London.
