Prince Philip helped design the Land Rover which will carry his coffin

Buckingham Palace confirmed that Prince Philip's funeral will take place on April 17, also revealing a poignant detail about the late royal's Prince Philip's funeral

They announced the Duke of Edinburgh's coffin will be carried in a specially-modified Land Rover, which Prince Philip himself aided in the design of.

The Prince was known for his interest in design and engineering.

The vehicle is believed to be a modified Defender 130 Gun Bus, commissioned in 2005.

Prince Philip apparently helped plan his own funeral and was adamant he didn't want a "fuss" made.

"The duke had a great interest in design so that is where the involvement of the Land Rover comes from," a Palace spokesman said. "The Land Rover was very much part of the original plans as approved by the duke."

After the news of his death was confirmed, a spokesperson at Jaguar Land Rover issued a statement, which read: "At Jaguar Land Rover, we are deeply saddened by the passing of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with Her Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family at this time. His Royal Highness devoted his life to public service and made a significant contribution to British manufacturing, engineering and design."

Windsor Castle issued a statement announcing Prince Philip's death At 12.01pm (9.01pm AEST) which read: "It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen announces the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh."

The Duke was involved in a serious crash in 2019 while driving a Land Rover Freelander. Philip, who was then 97, was hit by another vehicle when he was pulling out of a driveway on the Sandringham estate in Norfolk.

Passengers in the other vehicle included two women and a child who were treated at the hospital. No one was seriously injured in the accident.

Three weeks later Buckingham Palace announced that Philip had voluntarily surrendered his driving licence, with The CPS later confirming Philip would face no action over the crash.
