Prince William pulls out of BAFTA Awards appearances following Prince Philip's death

Prince William has pulled out of his two scheduled BAFTA Awards appearances this weekend, Kensington Palace has confirmed.

The Duke of Cambridge, who is the President of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts (BAFTA), was set host a live panel on Saturday and appear in a pre-recorded video message during Sunday night's main awards show.

BAFTA also confirmed to 9Honey that both appearances have been cancelled.

"In light of The Duke of Edinburgh's passing, The Duke of Cambridge will no longer be part of BAFTA programming this weekend," they said in a statement.

"Our thoughts are with the Royal Family, to whom we offer our deepest sympathy at this time."

This year's awards show — the British equivalent of the Oscars — has been split into two and spread out across the weekend, due to coronavirus restrictions in the UK.

Originally, the 38-year-old was set to host a discussion on during Saturday's show with three-time BAFTA award-winning costume designer Jenny Beavan as well as make up and hair designer Sharon Martin to talk about filming in lockdown and the craft of film-making.

Then during Sunday night's main event, the Duke was set to deliver a speech via video, in which he was going to celebrate the resilience of the film industry over the past year, amid the global pandemic.

Prince William has been the President of BAFTA for the past 10 years and attends the the event each year, walking the red carpet with wife Kate Middleton and then giving a speech on stage.
