Will Prince Louis start school soon despite the ongoing pandemic?

Prince Louis, the youngest son of Prince William and Kate Middleton, was all set to follow in his older siblings' footsteps and start school this year.

But those plans will likely be put on hold due to the coronavirus pandemic, as well as a minor royal tradition.

Louis, who turned two in April, is the same age as his siblings Prince George and Princess Charlotte were when they began their school careers.

Both children attended nursery schools, George, now 7, starting at the Westacre Montessori School in Norfolk and Charlotte at Willcocks Nursery School in London.

As such, Louis was expected to follow the pattern and begin at nursery school once he turned two, but with the coronavirus pandemic still a threat, Kate and William will be taking no chances.

It's highly unlikely that he will begin school this year, meaning he'll miss the official start of the new school year in September.

But that's not so unusual; George and Charlotte also skipped the 'official' start of school, the royal children joining their nurseries in January of 2016 and 2018 respectively.

It means that if William and Kate do decide to send Louis to school while he's two-years-old, he'll likely follow that minor royal tradition and start in January of 2021.

However, with the coronavirus pandemic still a very real threat in the UK, the Cambridges could decide to go down a different path with Louis' schooling.

They may choose to delay his start, waiting until the pandemic is better controlled before sending him to face-to-face nursery classes.

The couple could also choose to return to an older royal tradition and have Louis educated by a private tutor in their home.

Until recent decades, most royal children were taught privately and completed all their schooling without ever setting foot in a 'normal' school.

The Queen's children – Prince Charles, Princess Anne, prince Andrew and Prince Edward – were the first generation to really move away from this type of home education.

Princess Diana was also adamant that her children, William and Prince Harry, would attend school to give them as "normal" an upbringing as possible.

Though it's unlikely William and Kate will want to return to this royal tradition for all of Louis' schooling, it's possible that he could be taught privately for a time until the pandemic is over.

The Cambridges have not commented on their plans for Louis' schooling.
