Prince Harry's Spare the most-streamed audiobook in Australia, Spotify Wrapped 2024 reveals

Prince Harry's memoir Spare has been crowned the most-streamed audiobook in Australia on Spotify.

The streaming giant announced its annual list of biggest hits in its Spotify Wrapped 2024 overnight.

For the first time, Spotify has included audiobooks in its end-of-year charts, with the Duke of Sussex's Spare coming in the top spot in Australia.

The audio book, which ran for 15 hours, was narrated by the Duke of Sussex.

Spare came in first, followed by A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, Atomic Habits by James Clear, It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover and The Fellowship of the Ring by J.R.R. Tolkien.

Globally, Spare did not make the top 10 of most streamed audiobooks. First place there was given to A Court of Thorns and Roses.

The Duke of Sussex published his first book in January 2023, just months after the death of his grandmother Queen Elizabeth II.

The book was a huge success and broke the Guinness World Record for the fastest selling non-fiction book of all time when it was published on January 10 (which happened to be his sister-in-law Catherine's birthday).

Spare came out in digital, paperback, and hardcover formats and was translated into 15 languages.

On the day of its release in the UK, total sales including audio and e-book editions were around 400,000 copies, making it the UK's fastest selling non-fiction book ever.

The book sold more than 1.4 million copies in the US, Canada and Britain on its first day with publishers Penguin Random House describing it as the largest first-day sales total for any non-fiction book it ever published.

Spare was ghost written by J. R. Moehringer and largely focused on Prince Harry playing second-fiddle to his brother the Prince of Wales, hence its title.

The book was ground-breaking for its unprecedented look into the royal family throughout the 410 pages.

In it, Harry described the palaces and royal residences with great detail, revealed touching anecdotes about the late Queen, King Charles and the notoriously private Prince and Princess of Wales (some good, some bad) and cleared up many untruths that have been peddled about his life for years.

There are four main themes to the book: the death of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales, Harry and William's sibling rivalry, the realities of being the "spare to the heir" and Harry's deep loathing of the media.

Despite his years of therapy, Harry's trauma following the death of his mother remains and was laid bare through much of Spare.

In Spare, Harry described being "assaulted" by William which resulted in a broken dog bowl and accused his stepmother Queen Camilla of leaking stories to the press, even calling Camilla "dangerous".

The King begged his sons not to "make my final years a misery" referring to their ongoing feud.

Harry said the Princess of Wales was insulted by Meghan referring to her having "baby brain" and said Kate was "taken aback" by Meghan asking to borrow her lip gloss moments before their first outing as the Fab Four.

Harry revealed he had killed 25 "enemy combatants" while serving with the British Army in Afghanistan, which was later criticised by UK's then-Defence Secretary

He also detailed losing his virginity by "an older lady" in a field behind a pub and spoke about his "frostnipped penis" suffered during a North Pole trek.

Following its publication, the book was soon called out by historian Hugo Vickers for a number of "quite serious" mistakes.
