What the British really think of Meghan Markle – and it may surprise you

Prince Harry and Meghan's recent tour of Australia drew crowds of thousands at their every public event, proving the popularity of the British royals remains as high as ever Down Under.

But in the UK, not everyone loves the Duchess of Sussex as much as we Aussies do.

The Duke of Sussex is the most popular member of his family, according to the results of a new poll asking the public to rank their favourite royals.

But his wife Meghan isn't doing so well, sitting at number six. Just 55 per cent of respondents said they had a positive view of the former actress.

The Duchess is only slightly more popular than heir to the throne, Prince Charles, who sits in seventh place.

His mother, the Queen, sits in second place, according to the findings by YouGov.

In third place is Prince William, the Duke of Cambridge. His wife, Kate, comes in at number four.

The younger royals have had quite the year, starting with the birth of Prince Louis in April. In May, Prince Harry tied the knot to Meghan Markle, which was closely followed by Prince Louis's christening. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex began their 16-day tour of Australia, New Zealand, Fiji and Tonga in October just as they announced their pregnancy.

The Queen has also had a busy year, with huge crowds turning out for her birthday during the Trooping the Colour in June.

Despite Prince Philip's retirement from public duties he still ranks higher than Meghan, coming in at number five.

Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, rounds out the top 10.
