Why Meghan Markle and Prince Harry are spending Valentine's Day apart this year

As a self-described "sucker" for Valentine's Day, the Duchess of Sussex probably had plenty of ideas in mind for how she'd spend the occasion with husband Prince Harry.

However, the delivery of long-stemmed red roses may have to be put on hold, as it seems the royal couple will be several kilometres apart on February 14.

Hello! reports Harry, 34, will be carrying out a solo royal engagement in Norway on Valentine's Day, visiting marines and navy personnel stationed there.

The Duke will touch down in Bardufoss to mark the 50-year anniversary of sailors and airmen undergoing extreme cold weather training as part of Exercise Clockwork.

He'll certainly need to pack his thermals; located 322km inside the Arctic Circle, Exercise Clockwork operates in sub-zero temperatures. 

Back in London—which will seem balmy in comparison—Meghan will be spending Valentine's Day without her husband. 

However, we're fairly confident that won't dampen her plans to celebrate.

You see, back in her lifestyle blogging days, Meghan often wrote about how the love-fest that is February 14 shouldn't exclusively apply to couples.

In 2015, she compelled her followers to celebrate themselves on Valentine's Day, regardless of relationship status.

"Whether you have a special someone, you'll be with friends, or you'll be flying solo ... be good to yourself. Love yourself, treat yourself, honour yourself and celebrate you," she wrote on her now-defunct website The Tig.

"Be your own beautiful, darling, cherished and funny Valentine. You deserve it."

Though happily ensconced in a relationship these days, Meghan acknowledged how February 14 can bring up mixed feelings, from the "lovey dovey to the lonesome".

"It’s a strangely divisive one. Where couples are cuddled up and singletons see their requisite froyo as a cup of lonely," she wrote.

"But it doesn’t need to be. I think you need to be your own Valentine."

One thing is for sure: next year's Valentine's Day will look dramatically different for Meghan and Harry, with the first baby Sussex due in the next few months.
