Harry's candid backstage moment caught at US appearance without Meghan

Prince Harry has said that the coronavirus vaccine shouldn't be "politicised" in previously unseen backstage footage from a recent solo appearance.

The royal appeared last week at Global Citizen's VAX Live: The Concert to Reunite the World without his wife Meghan Markle, who is heavily pregnant with their second child.

The concert was aired in the US on Saturday, with Global Citizen releasing a candid backstage moment with the Duke of Sussex prior to the TV event.

In the clip, Harry speaks about the importance of "healing" from the COVID-19 crisis and insists that vaccines should not be a political issue.

"Over the last year, everyone has experienced so much loss and so much struggle and I think the only way that we are really going to heal and recover is to do that together," he says in the clip.

"When [Global Citizen CEO Hugh Evans] asked us to be campaign chairs, of course, we jumped at the opportunity to say yes, to throw our support behind this because we believe in it.

"But I think what we really need to be aware of and what we cannot allow to happen, is science being politicised." 

The Duke of Sussex went on to say that "so many things have been politicised over the years" but that COVID-19 vaccination shouldn't be a political point of contention.

"When we're talking about life and death — which is what we're talking about now — vaccines cannot be politicised," he said.

"Being able to come together as humans, as people, is how we're going to get ourselves out of this and we must ensure that everyone around the world has equal access to the vaccine, otherwise none of this works." 

He's not the first royal to speak out about the importance of vaccination, with the likes of Prince William in the UK insisting people get vaccinated when they're able.

Several royals, including the Queen herself, have already received the COVID-19 vaccine in the UK.

Meanwhile, the audience at the Global Citizen concert in Los Angeles "went crazy" for Harry when he appeared on stage, even without his pregnant wife Meghan.

Harry joined forces with celebrities, musicians and world leaders at the Vax Live event, a charity fundraiser in aid of the international COVID vaccination rollout.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are campaign chairs of the Vax Live event, organised by anti-poverty group Global Citizen.

But Meghan didn't make an appearance at the concert, despite a post on their Archewell website suggesting the pair would "deliver an important message for vaccine equity" together.
