Harry and Meghan's surprising new hire

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have welcomed a surprising new addition to their team, hiring a radio host as a director for their Sussex Royal Foundation.

The couple announced the launch of their own charity after splitting from the Royal Foundation they previously shared with Prince William and Kate Middleton, and have since hired several directors and staff to help run the organisation.

The latest hire is former BBC radio host Kirsty Young, who just so happens to be a close friend of the Duke and Duchess and even lead BBC's coverage of their royal wedding last year.

Harry and Meghan originally asked Young to sign on for the role earlier this year when they announced their new charity, but scheduling conflicts meant she wasn't available until recently.

Young has now stepped down from BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs in order to take on the royal role, joining Professor Stefan Allesch-Taylor, Steven Cooper and Karen Blackett on the Sussex Royal Foundation team.

"After 12 incredibly happy and fulfilling years on Desert Island Discs, I've decided to step down permanently," she said in a statement released by the BBC in July.

"Having been forced to take some months away from my favourite job because of health problems, I'm happy to say I'm now well on the way to feeling much better."

Young has a form of fibromyalgia that causes chronic pain and tenderness in her body, but received treatment for the condition in 2018.

"But that enforced absence from the show has altered my perspective on what I should do next and so I've decided it's time to pursue new challenges," she added.

New challenges like working for the royal family!

Young's appointment has left royal fans excited to see what plans Harry and Meghan have for their new charity as they continue to hire staff and develop the project.

Having just completed a royal tour of Africa, some have speculated the pair will use the Sussex Royal Foundation to help support projects and causes in the countries they visited, while others think Meghan's passion for women's causes will also be highlighted.
