'They're not just Harry and Meghan': Detail of Aussie tour that has people up in arms

Prince Harry and Meghan have all of Australia talking once again as they tour our sunny shores for the first time since 2018. Unsurprisingly, the visit has sparked mixed opinions – especially where the couple's motives are concerned.

Nine.com.au's royal reporter Natalie Oliveri says much of the contention over the tour is tied to how the couple – who stepped back as senior working royals in 2020 to become financially independent – are being promoted.

"I think the anger around Harry and Meghan, particularly because they are making money in Australia, is [that] their events are being sold off 'the Duke and Duchess of Sussex'," she says in the first episode of brand new vodcast Royal Briefing.

"They're not just 'Prince Harry and Meghan'."

In Royal Briefing, Oliveri unpacks the couple's tour with entertainment editor Nicole Douglas, who has a different take on their ongoing use of the Sussex titles bestowed on them by Queen Elizabeth when they married in 2018.

"They've been through so much. They deserve the titles to give them a bit more pizzazz," she reasons.

To Oliveri, Harry and Meghan's use of the titles while they pursue their own ventures away from the monarchy stands at odds with their public criticism of the institution since their 'royal exit'.

"I would be using my royal title if I had it as well, but I think I'd probably stop whinging so much about how tough life was in the royal family," she says.

"I'm sure things were tough, but did they need to speak so vocally about it on more than one occasion? Did they need to keep going?"

Oliveri and Douglas also discuss whether the Sussexes are "stepping on the royal family's toes" by returning to Australia.

"I think Harry and Megan do need to have a successful time in Australia, because I really don't know what they're going to be doing next," Oliveri says.
