The Duke of Sussex has gone head to head with Germany's defence minister in a penalty shoot out live on television.

But if Prince Harry was looking for victory, he was bitterly disappointed.

The 38-year-old was thrashed by Boris Pistorius during the segment in promotion of the Invictus Games.

Prince Harry took a total of six shots but failed to score a single goal during his appearance on the show Das Aktuelles Sportstudio on ZDF.

Handing the ball to Pistorius, he joked: "This one is rubbish" and laughed about his terrible performance.

Harry then put on a local German football scarf as punishment for losing the challenge.

The duke is in Germany for the Invictus Games, an international sporting competition for wounded and recovering war veterans.

The event was created in 2014 by Prince Harry after he served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

As a short film about the games aired during the television show, Prince Harry said: "I've spoken a lot and at length about myself in the past to encourage others to speak about their experiences.

"They should have been given the main part of this film, not me."

Earlier he had paid tribute to the late Queen in a speech at the WellChild Awards in London on Thursday evening.

In the coming days Prince Harry is expected to be joined by wife Meghan, the Duchess of Sussex.

Speaking at the opening ceremony on Saturday Harry told competitors Meghan would be cheering on Nigeria, having recently discovered that she was of Nigerian descent.

In October last year the duchess revealed on her Archetypes podcast that she was "43 per cent Nigerian".

Prince Harry made the comments after giving a special welcome to Colombia, Israel and Nigeria, the three nations new to Invictus Games in 2023.

"Now, I'm not saying we play favourites in our home, but since my wife discovered that she's of Nigerian descent it's likely to get a little bit competitive this year," Prince Harry said.

Prince Harry attended a number of events on Sunday including the UK versus France wheelchair rugby match.
