Prince Harry in talks to make Diana film for Netflix as he attends WellChild Awards alone

The Duke of Sussex is reportedly in talks with friends and family of his mother Diana, the late Princess of Wales, as he prepares to make a documentary commemorating 30 years since her death in Paris.

Prince Harry, who attended his third event since moving back to the UK, is said to want to honour Diana’s legacy “in the most meaningful way”, according to The Telegraph UK.

Rumours of Harry’s interest in making a documentary about the late Princess of Wales have been circulating for several years.

A source told the publication: “The duke has discussed a number of possible projects to mark the 30th anniversary of his mother Diana, Princess of Wales’s passing.

“Nothing has been finalised or confirmed, and he is still considering the most meaningful way to honour her legacy during this important anniversary year.”

In August 2027, it will be 30 years since Diana died in a car crash inside a Paris tunnel alongside her partner, Dodi Fayed, and their chauffeur Henri Paul.

A documentary made by Prince Harry would be done through his and Meghan’s media company, Archewell Productions. Netflix would get first dibs on the documentary under its ‘first look’ contract, signed with Harry and Meghan last year.

However, any such film about Diana would surely inflame tensions between Prince Harry and his brother Prince William.

The brothers have been estranged for years, and it is not known if there are any larger plans for the 30th anniversary next year in London.

In July 2021, William and Harry united to unveil a statue of their mother in the Sunken Garden at Kensington Palace on what would have been her 60th birthday. The feud between William and Harry had started around a year before the event.

They were joined by Diana’s siblings Earl Spencer, Lady Sarah McCorquodale and Lady Jane Fellowes.

Earl Spencer has been approached by his nephew to take part in the documentary, according to The Telegraph.

The earl has written a book about his sister, which he said was done now after being “inundated yet again” with requests for interviews as the 30th anniversary of her death approaches.

Last week, Buckingham Palace took the extraordinary step of issuing a statement accusing Earl Spencer of having “clouded reasoning”.

Prince Harry attends WellChild Awards

As Earl Spencer’s book makes headlines around the world, Prince Harry made his third appearance in London since moving back to Britain last month.

The Duke of Sussex refused to answer any questions about the book as he arrived at the Lancaster Hotel in London for the annual WellChild Awards on Monday night.

Prince Harry has been patron of the charity since 2007 which celebrates children living with complex medical needs and their families.

In an emotional speech on stage, the duke praised the children and their families who “give it everything they’ve got every single day”.

“To all the mums and dads − most of us will never truly know the emotional ups and downs of your day,” Harry said.

“But I sincerely hope that you take strength from nights like this. And while we may not know the detail of your day, in this room and beyond, we recognise the commitment of your care and all that comes with it.”

The Duchess of Sussex attended the WellChild Awards with Prince Harry in 2018 and 2019 but was absent this year, despite recently moving back to Britain.

Prince Harry was asked about his family’s return and said: “No longer being 5,000 miles away should make it easier to be more available to support the charities that need us, and I’m really looking forward to it”.

He and Meghan, along with their children Prince Archie, seven, and Princess Lilibet, five, are now living in the Cotswolds after six years in Montecito, California.

Harry said since the family has been back they have been doing “lots of walks”.

Meghan recently shared two videos on Instagram of the family enjoying life in the English countryside.

Prince Harry said his children were adapting to other parts of British life, too.

“Now the kids are eating Marmite on crumpets, which is big for me,” he told Hello! magazine.

“They used to diss me for having Marmite in the house, and now they’re in the UK it’s like that’s kind of like water under the bridge, so it’s good.”

One of the WellChild award recipients, Will Messer, gave Prince Harry a Funko Pop! figure of himself, which made the duke laugh. Harry told him the toy looked like Stewie Griffin from Family Guy.

While speaking with six-year-old Margot Jones Billington, Harry said her sparkly dress was “beautiful” before commenting on her shoes.

“These are amazing, can I touch them? Woah! You obviously love sparkles. I have a boy and a girl who are seven and five. My little girl loves sparkles and she loves pink. That’s her favourite colour,” he said of Princess Lilibet.
