Prince Harry apologises to Canada over 'hatgate' at World Series baseball game: 'I was under duress'

Prince Harry is doing his bit for world peace, apologising to Canada over a grave diplomatic mistake he committed last week.

Attending the fourth World Series baseball game between the LA Dodgers and Toronto Blue Jays in Los Angeles on October 28, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex were pictured wearing caps in support of the home team.

Even though Meghan was born and raised in LA, and she and Harry live in California, the Sussexes cheering on the Dodgers proved a rather spicy decision.

Now, while in Toronto for Remembrance Day, Harry has been grilled on his decision to so boldly turn his back on a Commonwealth country as an Englishman.

"Is there anything you would like to say about wearing that LA Dodgers hat last week and getting into hot water?" he was asked in an interview with local station CTV News.

Referring to the incident as "hatgate", Harry did some grovelling before explaining how the controversial cap found its way onto its head.

"Well, firstly, I would like to apologise to Canada for wearing it. Secondly, I was under duress," he said.

"There wasn't much choice. I was invited to the LA Dodgers box, or the dugout, by the owner himself, so I was doing what I thought was the polite thing to do."

The prince righted his wrong by placing a Blue Jays cap on his head, declaring, "I'm going to wear this from now on to make sure I don't make any more of those mistakes."

There was one more justification for Harry's betrayal, and it had nothing to do with politeness.

"The other piece of this was ... when you're missing a lot of hair on top and you're sitting under flood lights, you'll take any hat that's available," the duke added.

Harry added he was "Blue Jays throughout" the next three games of the series, joking it would now be hard for him to return to Los Angeles after that public admission.

Unfortunately, it seems a royal vote of confidence wasn't enough to get the team over the line, with the Dodgers eventually clinching World Series victory.

"I'm very sorry to the Canadian public. I'm devastated that the Blue Jays lost, but go Jays," Harry added.

While Harry and Meghan are proud Californians now, Canada also holds a special place in the couple's hearts.

Before she married into the royal family, Meghan lived in Toronto for many years while starring in legal drama Suits, which was filmed in the city.

The Sussexes also relocated to Canada temporarily at the end of 2019, remaining there after announcing their decision to step back as working royals in early 2020.

They eventually moved to the US and are now based in Montecito, a neighbourhood in Santa Barbara county.
