Why Prince George's latest royal milestone is attracting backlash

Since the moment he was born on July 22, 2014, it seems Prince George can do no wrong, with his every adorably cheeky moment captured and shared around the world by an adoring public.

However, last week the five-year-old hit his latest royal milestone, and the Twitter-verse is NOT happy about it.

According to royal correspondent Emily Andrews, Prince George participated in his very first grouse hunt, accompanied by family members including the Queen, Prince Charles, and his parents Kate and William..

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge spent the weekend at the Queen's Scottish estate, Balmoral Castle taking their eldest son with them while hunting the birds.

"George was taken to his first grouse shoot on Friday ... quite the family fun!" Andrews tweeted.

Grouse shooting season is from August 12 until December 10, with the birds found in heather moorland in Scotland. They have been hunted for the past 160 years.

Despite the added gravitas of the activity being a royal - not to mention Scottish - tradition, some have taken issue with Prince George taking part in the hunt.

"Prince William, in October of last year, made a speech warning us that 'global wildlife populations have halved in his lifetime,' Tweets one royal follower.

"Today, we learn he took his son, Prince George, on his first grouse shoot."

"I just saw that Prince George has been taken to his first grouse shoot, all in the name of 'sport,'" says another.

"Such a shame that another innocent child will grow up to believe that killing animals for fun will be the normal thing to do."

"Really surprised that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have made a modern day media gaff by taking Prince George to a Grouse shoot at Balmoral," comments a royal fan. "They shouldn't have needed advice on that one but they clearly didn't get any. Either that or they just don't care!"

"I just read a news article that said Prince George was taken to his first grouse shoot while staying a Balmoral," says another. "If that's the case, it make me feel sad & angry that he's going to grow up without any empathy for animals."

However some defended the little prince, saying it is hypocritical for anyone who eats meat to criticise the family for the decision.

"So Prince George has been taken to a Grouse shoot and people are outraged," comments a royal watcher.

"Odds on many of the same folk eat meat. Far better to kill and eat a bird raised in the wild, shot with no knowledge of what's coming than eat a factory farmed chicken/pig. Misplaced outrage in my opinion."
