Prince Charles visit to St Vincent ends with Prime Minister ruling out second republic referendum

Following a visit from Prince Charles and Camilla, the Prime Minister of St Vincent and the Grenadines has ruled out a vote to abolish the monarchy from his country.

The leader of the Caribbean nation made the comments after a day spent hosting The Prince of Wales and The Duchess of Cornwall, according to the Evening Standard.

PM Ralph Gonsalves had campaigned for the country to become a republic in 2009 but lost that first referendum.

On Wednesday, following a Governor General’s reception in the couple's honour in the capital of Kingstown, Gonsalves addressed the media.

The man who has been leader for a record five terms, since 2001, admitted he will not hold another referendum on the republic debate.

"Not with me, somebody else may do that, not me," he said.

Gonsalves narrowly lost the vote to abolish the Queen as Head of State and install a President, voted for by the people.

He begrudgingly accepted the decision, saying, according to ITV News: "St Vincent and the Grenadines is the only country in the Caribbean where the matter has been put to the people in respect of doing away with the monarchy and having a homegrown ceremonial president."

"I’m not a monarchist, but I accept it, the Queen of England not only legally but politically is the Queen of St Vincent and the Grenadines and I accept that."

Gonsalves and Prince Charles had a meeting together earlier in the day, while everyone had a hearty laugh as the Royals were given gifts.

Charles and Camilla are currently on a 12-day tour of the Caribbean and Cuba. Late on Thursday the couple will make their way to visit St Kitts and Nevis.
