Prince Charles and Prince Andrew's relationship in The Crown not accurate: 'They were the original Fab Four'

Prince Charles and Prince Andrew's brotherly bond was much closer than what is shown in The Crown, a royal commentator tells 9Honey.

As the Netflix drama wins millions of fans across the world, many experts are eager to point out the inaccuracies shown in season four.

The Prince of Wales and his younger brother, the Duke of York, are depicted in the show to be bickering and snippy, and don't try and hide jealousy and disdain for one another.

However, this is not how the brothers were in their younger years, Katie Nicholl says.

"There absolutely has been rivalry between Andrew and Charles but my understanding is that that rivalry developed at a later stage in life and that actually, when they were young handsome princes enjoying their early years of marriage, they were the 'Fab Four'," Nicholl tells 9Honey.

"They were the ones going on holidays together, they were the ones skiing together. And they had these sort of bright, gorgeous, exciting, new royal wives and there was actually, I think, more companionship between them at that stage in their life than perhaps at any other.

"So, I'm not sure that that's an entirely accurate reflection of their relationship at all. That rivalry, that jealousy came later."

Indeed, Prince Charles had Prince Andrew accompany him to St Paul's Cathedral on his wedding to Diana in 1981, where Andrew and their youngest brother Prince Edward both served as best man.

Prince Charles, Princess Diana, the Duchess of York and Prince Andrew also looked the picture of family fun when they posed on the slopes of Swiss resort of Klosters in February 1987.

Nicholl says that Sarah Ferguson wouldn't be upset that she doesn't have a more prominent role in the show.

"Fergie was used to having to play second fiddle to Diana in real life, so she's probably not going to be surprised at having to play second fiddle on a screen adaptation," the biographer tells 9Honey, adding: "Of course, we're going to have a series five and possibly she'll feature more prominently in that."

The Royal Family hasn't commented on the series, but it's believed the current season has angered courtiers with the way Prince Charles has been portrayed — especially as it has impacted public perception of the future king and Camilla.
