Meet the newest royal baby: Luxembourg's Prince Charles

Luxembourg has a new prince, the second in line to its throne: Charles Jean Philippe Joseph Marie Guillaume has been born to Crown Prince Guillaume and Princess Stephanie.

The birth of the child early on Sunday morning to the couple tapped to take over the Grand Duchy is to be celebrated with 21 canon shots fired from Fort Thuengen in Luxembourg city, according to a statement from the small landlocked principality's ministry of state.

Prime Minister Xavier Bettel extended his congratulations to the new parents for their firstborn child.

The baby prince is to join the ranks of four cousins; Noah, Gabriel, Amalia and Liam.

According to an announcement on the royal website:

"The child weighs 3,190 kg and is 50 cm.

"The Crown Princess and her child are both doing well.

"The Crown Prince and the Crown Princess look forward to introducing him to the people of Luxembourg."

Guillaume, 38, is likely to be the seventh ruler in the Luxembourg branch of the Nassau-Weilburg dynasty. Stephanie, 36, comes from one of the oldest noble families in Belgium and became a Luxembourger upon their marriage in 2012.

Grand Duke Henri has ruled Luxembourg since 2000.
