Prince Charles and Camilla have enjoyed a night out at the movies.

The couple attended the World Premiere and Royal Film Performance of the new war epic 1917, written and directed by Oscar-winning Sam Mendes.

"I'm delighted because it's a significant cultural event in the UK," Mendes told 9Honey on the red carpet as he spoke about the special guests of the evening.

"It's made in the UK, it's full of British actors, made in Britain and it's my country so I feel like it's getting the best possible send off."

The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall drove their car down the red carpet on the cold night in London's Leicester Square.

Once inside, Prince Charles was introduced to members of the star-studded cast, including newcomer Georgie MacKay, Richard Madden (Bodyguard), Andrew Scott (Fleabag) and Mark Strong (Kingsman).

Before taking their seats inside the Odeon Luxe cinemas (the equivalent to Gold Class), Prince Charles and Camilla got their programs from some very special guests.

Celia Chapman is the sister of the film's lead actor Dean-Charles Chapman presented a program to Prince Charles with a lavish curtsy.

While two other young girls Izzy and Jess Scott, whose family were previously supported by the Film and TV Charity, presented the Duchess with her program and a posy of flowers.

It's the second time the charity has partnered with a Sam Mendes movie, with 007 film Spectre premiering at Royal Albert Hall with Prince William, Kate Middleton and Prince Harry attending together, in 2015.

Prince Charles and Camilla also attended the Royal World Premiere of The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel in 2015, raising funds for the organisation — formerly known as the Cinema & Television Benevolent Fund — which offers emotional and financial support to those working behind-the-scenes in the industry.

The blockbuster from the former Bond director is an epic drama about two soldiers in World War I, who take on a dangerous mission which helps save 1600 men from certain doom.
