Photo taken during Prince Andrew's infamous BBC Newsnight interview could be immortalised inside National Portrait Gallery

Prince Andrew's disastrous interview about his relationship with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein could be immortalised in London's most prestigious art gallery.

A photograph taken during the Duke of York's infamous BBC interview is "being considered" for inclusion in the National Portrait Gallery.

The 2019 sit-down with presenter Emily Maitlis for Newsnight saw the duke squirming when questioned over his links with Epstein.

He denied allegations he sexually abused accuser Virginia Giuffre when she was just 17.

The interview produced some unforgettable moments from Prince Andrew, including his claim that he is unable to sweat due to an injury suffered during his time in the Falkland War.

He showed little sympathy for Epstein's victims, which drew widespread criticism, and claimed he was at a Pizza Express with one of his daughters at the time he was accused of abusing Giuffre inside a London townhouse.

Days after the interview aired, Prince Andrew stepped back from public duties and lost most of his patronages and HRH title.

Now, an image taken during that interview in November 2019 might soon hang inside the gallery after photographer Mark Harrison, who already has images on display in the publicly-funded gallery, offered it up.

Curators are now considering its inclusion, which would see it viewed by more than a million visitors each year.

A spokesperson for the gallery told UK media a decision was pending.

"The photograph has not been acquired for the Gallery's Collection. The photograph has been offered to the Gallery as a gift by the photographer and the offer is being considered via our standard acquisitions process," they said via a statement.

Royal commentator Margaret Holder told the MailOnline the image would be seen as a "symbol of his disgrace [and] of his downfall as the son of a monarch, the brother of a monarch and a father".

The Princess of Wales is patron of the National Portrait Gallery but has no say over what works are included in the permanent collection.

Next month, a drama series focusing on the Newsnight interview will air on Amazon Prime.

A Very Royal Scandal will see Michael Sheen portray Prince Andrew alongside Ruth Wilson as Maitlis.

The real-life Maitlis was an executive producer on the series and worked closely with the actors during the show's development.

The drama comes just months after Netflix aired its own series on the interview, called Scoop.
